Getting from Incheon Airport to Busan looks simple on a map.
In reality, your best route depends on three things: what time your flight lands, how much luggage you have, and where you are staying in Busan.
For most first-time visitors, the easiest balance is:
Incheon Airport → AREX → Seoul Station → KTX → Busan Station
There is no direct KTX from Incheon Airport to Busan, so you need to change trains at Seoul Station.
A direct airport bus can be easier if you have several large suitcases and the schedule happens to work well.
Flying from Gimpo to Gimhae also looks tempting because the flight itself is only about an hour, but once you add the transfer to Gimpo, check-in, security, baggage claim, and the ride into Busan, it is not always faster.
Here is what actually matters before you choose.

First, There Is No Direct KTX from Incheon Airport to Busan
This is the part that catches people out.
Older travel guides may mention a KTX from Incheon Airport, because airport KTX services did exist in the past.
That is not the current setup.
As of September 2026, the normal rail route is:
Incheon Airport → Seoul Station by AREX → Busan Station by KTX
The good news is that both AREX services go to Seoul Station, so you do not need to take a taxi across Seoul just to reach the KTX.
You only have one main transfer.
Taking AREX and KTX to Busan
For most travelers, this is the route that makes the most sense.
It is not completely effortless, especially with a big suitcase, but the trains are frequent and Busan Station is a very useful place to arrive.
Incheon Airport to Seoul Station
After leaving the arrivals area, follow the signs for:
Airport Railroad / AREX
You can choose between the Express Train and the All-Stop Train. Our AREX Express vs All-Stop comparison explains how the two services differ.
| AREX | Terminal 1 → Seoul Station | Terminal 2 → Seoul Station | Adult Fare | What It Feels Like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Express Train | About 43 min | About 51 min | ₩13,000 | Reserved seat, easier with luggage |
| All-Stop Train | About 59 min | About 66 min | ₩4,750 from T1 / ₩5,350 from T2 | Regular commuter-style train |
The Express Train is more expensive, but after a long flight, having an assigned seat can be worth the difference.
The All-Stop Train is perfectly usable if you are traveling light and want to save money.
The difference is less about speed than comfort.
If you land during a busy commuting period with a large suitcase, that becomes very obvious.

Transferring at Seoul Station
Seoul Station is large, and the AREX platforms are fairly deep underground.
After getting off the airport train, follow signs for:
KTX / Korail / Train
There are elevators and escalators, but you should still expect some walking.
I would not plan around a 10-minute transfer.
Even if the timetable technically looks possible, finding the right concourse with luggage after a long-haul flight is not the moment to test your sprinting ability.
A practical buffer is around 30 minutes.
If you have large luggage, children, or anyone in your group who needs more time to move around, 40 to 50 minutes is more comfortable.
That is not an official minimum connection time. It is simply a realistic travel buffer.
AREX and KTX also use separate tickets.
A T-money card does not replace a KTX ticket.

Seoul to Busan by KTX
Once you are on the KTX, the difficult part is basically over.
Most Seoul–Busan services take roughly 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes, depending on the number of stops.
There was also an important fare change in September 2026.
From September 1, 2026, the standard Seoul–Busan KTX fare changed from ₩59,800 to ₩54,400.
That makes the usual rail cost:
- AREX Express + KTX: ₩67,400
- AREX All-Stop from Terminal 1 + KTX: ₩59,150
- AREX All-Stop from Terminal 2 + KTX: ₩59,750
These are standard adult fares before any discount.
Check the actual fare again when booking because train type, discount programs, and later fare changes can affect the final price.
Busan Station is especially convenient if you are staying around Busan Station, Nampo, Jagalchi, the port area, or Seomyeon.

Should You Book the KTX Before You Land?
This depends on the day.
Booking early gives you a guaranteed seat.
But booking a train too close to your scheduled landing time can create unnecessary stress.
Before you reach Seoul Station, you still need to:
- Clear immigration
- Wait for checked luggage
- Pass customs
- Walk to AREX
- Wait for the train
- Ride to Seoul Station
- Transfer to the KTX area
For a daytime international arrival with checked baggage, leaving around three to four hours between scheduled landing and KTX departure is a reasonable planning range.
That is not an official rule.
It is just enough time to account for normal airport delays without turning your first day in Korea into a race.
On a quiet weekday, you may prefer to wait until you clear immigration and then buy your KTX ticket. If that leaves you with spare time at Seoul Station, see what to do before your KTX.
On Friday evenings, Sundays, or major Korean holidays, advance booking becomes more useful because popular trains can sell out.
What About Large Suitcases?
Large luggage is allowed on KTX.
But there is no airline-style checked baggage service.
Depending on the train, larger suitcases can usually go in luggage areas near the ends of the carriage, while smaller bags can use overhead racks.
Space is limited.
One big suitcase is usually manageable.
A family traveling with four large cases may find the direct airport bus physically easier, simply because the bags go underneath the coach and stay there.
Taking a Direct Bus from Incheon Airport to Busan
The bus sounds attractive for one obvious reason:
No Seoul Station transfer.
If you are exhausted and dragging several large suitcases, that matters.
Depending on the current schedule, direct airport buses may serve Busan areas such as:
- Nopo / Busan Dongbu
- Sasang / West Busan
- Haeundae
This is where you need to be careful.
There is not one single generic “Busan bus.”
The destination terminal matters almost as much as the travel time.
For budgeting, around ₩50,000 is a reasonable estimate, but check the live fare before traveling.
Travel time is often around five to six and a half hours, depending on traffic and route.
The biggest advantage is comfort with luggage.
The biggest disadvantage is schedule flexibility.
KTX trains run much more frequently.
And if your bus drops you at Nopo while your hotel is near Nampo, you have simply moved the final problem to the other end of the trip.
Flying from Gimpo to Busan
Flying sounds like the fastest option.
Sometimes it is.
But you need to look at the whole route:
Incheon Airport → Gimpo Airport → Gimhae Airport → your Busan hotel
The domestic flight itself is only around 65 to 70 minutes.
The rest of the journey includes getting to Gimpo, walking to the domestic terminal, check-in, security, waiting at the gate, baggage claim, and then traveling from Gimhae Airport into Busan.
From Incheon Airport, use the AREX All-Stop Train to Gimpo Airport.
The Express Train does not stop there.
For travelers with carry-on luggage and a flight that lines up perfectly, flying can be competitive.
With checked luggage and an awkward departure time, it can easily take as long as KTX or longer.
Where You Stay in Busan Changes the Answer
“Busan” is a large city.
The best route is not always the one that reaches the city boundary first.
| Arrival Point | Convenient For | What to Expect After Arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Busan Station | Busan Station, Nampo, Jagalchi, port area, Seomyeon | Easy access to Metro Line 1 |
| Nopo / Busan Dongbu | Northern Busan | Extra metro ride to central Busan |
| Sasang | Western Busan | Useful for western areas and the Gimhae side |
| Haeundae bus stop | Haeundae | Very convenient if your hotel is nearby |
| Gimhae Airport | Western Busan, some Seomyeon routes | Light rail, metro, bus or taxi still required |
Before booking anything, put your actual hotel address into Naver Map or Kakao Map.
A route that looks 30 minutes faster can quickly lose that advantage if it leaves you on the wrong side of Busan.
If Your Hotel Is Near Busan Station, Nampo or Jagalchi
Take AREX and KTX.
This is the easiest case.
KTX gets you directly to Busan Station, and Nampo and Jagalchi are easy to reach from there.
Flying usually creates more work than it saves.
If You Are Staying in Seomyeon
KTX is still a very easy default.
Busan Station and Seomyeon are directly connected by Metro Line 1.
A well-timed flight can also work, but compare the full route from Gimhae Airport rather than the flight time alone.
If You Are Staying in Haeundae
This is the one area where I would compare all the options more carefully.
A direct airport bus specifically serving Haeundae can be very convenient if its departure time fits your arrival.
KTX is much more frequent, but after reaching Busan Station you still need to cross the city toward Haeundae.
A flight can also make sense if the Gimhae Airport connection is good.
If You Are Staying in Gwangalli
KTX is usually the simplest default.
You will still need a final subway or taxi ride from Busan Station.
Flying into Gimhae does not automatically put you close to Gwangalli either, so compare the whole trip.
What If You Land Late at Night?
This is where the easy daytime advice stops working.
Even if you can still catch AREX into Seoul, the last useful KTX to Busan may already be gone by the time you reach Seoul Station.
Direct Busan buses and domestic flights also become much less useful late in the evening.
If your flight is scheduled to arrive late, check the exact final departures for that date before assuming you can continue to Busan.
Sometimes the better decision is simply to sleep.
You can stay near Incheon Airport and leave the next morning.
Or, if you can still reach central Seoul comfortably, stay around Seoul Station and take an early KTX.
There is very little value in designing a 400-kilometer journey around the last possible connection after a long international flight.
Korea will still be there after breakfast.
Staying Overnight Can Be the Better Choice
Going straight to Busan is not automatically the best travel decision.
An overnight stay near Incheon Airport makes sense if you arrive late, have young children, are traveling with an older family member, have several large suitcases, or know jet lag is going to hit hard.
Staying around Seoul Station can make more sense if you arrive early enough to reach Seoul but too late for a comfortable Busan connection.
Then you can wake up, take an early KTX, and start the next day without repeating the airport journey.
The best route is not always the one with the shortest timetable.
It is the one that still feels manageable after a long flight.
Landing too late for a comfortable transfer? Compare an airport hotel with a Seoul Station hotel for your arrival date. An airport stay reduces the first-night transfer; a Seoul Station stay puts you closer to the next morning’s KTX. Check the total room price, late check-in and the first train you could realistically catch.
How to Book the Tickets
For AREX Express, use the official AREX website or buy your ticket at the airport station.
The All-Stop Train does not need a reservation and is easy to use with a compatible transit card such as T-money.
For KTX, use the official Korail English website or the current Korail booking app.
Search:
From: Seoul
To: Busan
Do not search for a direct Incheon Airport–Busan KTX because there is no current direct service.
For buses, use the official Incheon International Airport transportation information and confirm the exact terminal, travel date, Busan arrival point, and boarding location.
For domestic flights, check the current Gimpo–Gimhae schedule and then book directly with the operating airline.
Do You Need a T-money Card?
A T-money card is useful, but it does not cover everything.
| Transport | T-money? |
|---|---|
| AREX Express | No — separate reserved ticket |
| AREX All-Stop | Yes, convenient |
| KTX | No — separate Korail ticket |
| Intercity airport bus | Buy the specific bus ticket |
| Busan subway and local buses | Yes, useful |
Think of T-money as your everyday local transport card.
It is not one ticket for every train and bus in Korea.
So, Which Route Makes the Most Sense?
For most first-time visitors, AREX Express + KTX is still the easiest overall choice.
If you are watching your budget and traveling light, AREX All-Stop + KTX saves money without changing the route.
If you have several large suitcases and a direct airport bus happens to leave at a convenient time, the bus may be easier.
If you find a well-timed flight from Gimpo and your Busan destination works well from Gimhae Airport, flying can be worth comparing.
There is no single answer for every traveler.
But for a first trip, one suitcase, and a hotel around central Busan, KTX is usually the least complicated.
And after a long international flight, uncomplicated has a lot going for it.
