Seoul Station to Incheon Airport: AREX Express vs All-Stop Train

If you are traveling from Seoul Station to Incheon Airport, you will probably end up choosing between two Airport Railroad trains:

AREX Express and AREX All-Stop.

They go to the same airport.

They are not the same experience.

The Express costs more, runs nonstop, and gives you an assigned seat.

The All-Stop is much cheaper and takes roughly 15–16 minutes longer, but it works much more like a normal commuter train: no reservation and no guaranteed seat.

For a first trip with luggage, the Express is usually the easier option.

For a solo traveler with one small bag and plenty of time, the All-Stop can make perfect sense.

But the train choice is not actually the most important part.

Knowing whether your flight leaves from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2—and arriving with enough airport time—is much more important than saving 15 minutes.

The time difference is smaller than many travelers expect.

The comfort difference can feel much bigger.

AREX Express: The Easier Option With Luggage

The AREX Express leaves Seoul Station and runs nonstop to Incheon Airport Terminal 1 before continuing to Terminal 2.

Official journey times are:

  • 43 minutes to Terminal 1
  • 51 minutes to Terminal 2

The adult fare checked for this guide is ₩13,000.

That includes an assigned seat.

Current official schedules checked on September 9, 2026 showed the first Seoul Station departure at 06:00 and the last at 23:00.

One important detail: Express trains are not spaced at perfectly even intervals.

Do not assume that missing one means another will arrive exactly 30 minutes later.

Check the official AREX Express timetable for your travel date.

At Seoul Station:

  • Express ticketing is on B2
  • Seoul Station City Airport Terminal is also on B2
  • The Express platform is on B7

Tickets can be purchased online, through the official AREX app, at a multilingual machine, or at the customer center.

AREX lists major foreign-issued cards including Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, and UnionPay among accepted payment options.

The train also has luggage racks.

That is where the extra fare starts to make sense.

You are not paying ₩13,000 because the Express saves half your day.

You are mostly paying for:

  • An assigned seat
  • Easier luggage handling
  • No intermediate stops
  • A more predictable airport transfer
  • Access to City Airport Terminal services if eligible

If you have a large suitcase, children, or simply do not want your final Seoul transit experience to become an airport-themed obstacle course, the Express is easier.

AREX All-Stop: Much Cheaper, Still Perfectly Usable

The AREX All-Stop Train uses the same airport rail corridor but stops along the way.

Stops include places such as:

  • Gongdeok
  • Hongik University
  • Digital Media City
  • Gimpo Airport
  • Other stations in western Seoul and Incheon

From Seoul Station, the typical official journey time is approximately:

  • 59 minutes to Terminal 1
  • 66 minutes to Terminal 2

AREX notes that some services can take several minutes longer.

Using a transport card, the adult fare checked for this guide is:

  • ₩4,750 to Terminal 1
  • ₩5,350 to Terminal 2

A disposable single-journey ticket costs slightly more and also uses a refundable deposit.

The All-Stop train uses metro-style seating.

There is no assigned seat.

There is no personal luggage rack waiting for you.

Off-peak, one traveler with one suitcase may have absolutely no problem.

During busy commuter periods, the same trip can feel very different.

That makes the All-Stop especially sensible when:

  • You are traveling light
  • You already have T-money
  • Budget matters
  • You have plenty of airport buffer
  • You do not mind commuter-style seating

One more thing matters late at night.

Not every late Airport Railroad train necessarily continues all the way to Incheon Airport.

Check the destination display before boarding and make sure the train actually continues to your terminal.

Is the AREX Express Worth the Extra Money?

By travel time alone, the difference is not dramatic.

The Express saves roughly 15–16 minutes.

But real travel does not happen inside a comparison table.

If the next Express is 35 or 40 minutes away and an All-Stop train is about to leave, the “faster” train may get you to the airport later.

So compare the actual next departures, not just the published journey times.

The Express becomes more attractive when you care about:

  • Assigned seating
  • Large luggage
  • Traveling with children
  • Avoiding crowded commuter trains
  • Using Seoul Station City Airport Terminal

The All-Stop is much better value when you are traveling lightly and have time.

A solo traveler with one backpack may quite reasonably keep the extra money for lunch.

A family with several suitcases may consider the extra fare money well spent.

Terminal 1 or Terminal 2?

This is the part you really do not want to guess.

AREX serves two separate airport stations:

Incheon Airport Terminal 1

and

Incheon Airport Terminal 2

Check your airline, flight number, booking, and boarding information before leaving Seoul Station.

Airline terminal assignments changed during 2025–2026, so an old blog post or screenshot can be wrong even if it was accurate when it was published.

Use the official Incheon Airport airline-by-terminal search, then confirm again with your airline or current flight information.

If your flight leaves from Terminal 2, stay on the train after Terminal 1.

The additional ride is around eight minutes.

Getting off at the wrong terminal is fixable.

It is just a deeply unhelpful way to spend the time you were supposed to use for security.

Can You Check In at Seoul Station Before Going to the Airport?

Sometimes.

And if your flight qualifies, this can make the Express much more useful.

The Seoul Station City Airport Terminal is located on B2.

Eligible passengers can complete airline check-in, drop standard baggage, and complete departure immigration before taking the Express to Incheon Airport.

You need:

  • A same-day international flight
  • An eligible airline and route
  • An AREX Express ticket
  • Enough time before the service cutoff

All-Stop passengers cannot use the City Airport Terminal service.

As checked September 9, 2026, check-in and baggage service operates from 05:20 to 19:00, with final reception at 18:50.

You must complete the process at least:

  • 3 hours before a Terminal 1 flight
  • 3 hours 20 minutes before a Terminal 2 flight

Departure immigration at Seoul Station operates from 05:30 to 19:00.

Airlines Listed as Eligible on September 9, 2026

Terminal 1

  • Jeju Air
  • T’way Air
  • Eastar Jet

Terminal 2

  • Korean Air
  • Asiana Airlines
  • Jin Air
  • Air Busan
  • Air Seoul

This does not mean every flight operated by those airlines qualifies.

Some routes are excluded.

Codeshare eligibility can depend on the actual operating carrier.

Check your exact flight before planning around city check-in.

After completing the process at Seoul Station, eligible passengers can use the designated city-airport departure lane at Incheon Airport.

You still go through airport security.

City check-in saves baggage and immigration hassle.

It does not teleport you into duty free.

Who Cannot Use Seoul Station City Airport Check-In?

You may not be able to use the service if:

  • Your airline is not eligible
  • Your route is excluded
  • You arrive after the cutoff
  • Your baggage requires special handling
  • You have certain oversized or unusual items
  • Your passenger or documentation situation requires an airport counter

Special baggage such as some sports equipment, musical instruments, unusually long items, or very heavy baggage may also be excluded.

If your flight, baggage, documents, pet, or assistance needs are unusual, check directly with the airline and AREX before relying on Seoul Station check-in.

Taking AREX With Large Luggage

This is where the Express has one of its clearest advantages.

The Express gives you:

  • Assigned seating
  • Shared luggage racks
  • Fewer passenger movements because there are no intermediate stops

Board with enough time to place your suitcase securely.

Rack space is shared, not reserved.

Keep valuables with you.

The All-Stop train is more like a normal subway train.

One suitcase may be perfectly manageable outside rush hour.

Several large cases in a crowded carriage can become annoying very quickly.

Keep luggage away from doors and aisles and stop rolling bags from moving when the train starts or brakes.

For families carrying several suitcases, the Express premium is often paying for less chaos, not just a 15-minute time saving.

Can You Use T-money to Incheon Airport?

Yes on the All-Stop Train.

No as payment for the AREX Express ticket.

For the All-Stop service, tap a loaded T-money or compatible transportation card at the regular fare gate.

The checked adult fares are:

  • ₩4,750 to T1
  • ₩5,350 to T2

The Express requires its own train-specific ticket and QR code.

Having a T-money card in your wallet does not reserve an Express seat.

How to Buy an AREX Ticket at Seoul Station

AREX Express

  1. Confirm whether your flight leaves from T1 or T2.
  2. Go to the Express area on B2.
  3. Use an AREX machine, customer center, official website, or app.
  4. Choose Seoul Station, terminal, date, departure, and number of passengers.
  5. Complete payment and keep the QR ticket ready.
  6. Follow the Express signs to the B7 platform.

Multilingual machines support several languages including English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.

AREX advises passengers to arrive at the platform before departure.

For a first visit with luggage, give yourself much more than the bare minimum.

AREX All-Stop

Follow the blue Airport Railroad / All-Stop signs rather than the Express entrance.

Tap T-money at the normal gate, or buy a disposable ticket.

Before boarding, check that the destination continues to Incheon Airport rather than terminating earlier.

How Early Should You Leave Seoul Station?

Work backward from your flight.

Do not start with “Which train do I want?”

Start with:

“What time do I need to be at the airport?”

For a first international trip without Seoul Station city check-in, arriving at Incheon Airport around three hours before departure is a comfortable planning target.

That is an MBK planning buffer, not a universal airline rule.

Your airline’s actual cutoff always matters more.

Then add:

  • 43 minutes to T1 or 51 minutes to T2 on the Express
  • Waiting time before the train
  • Time inside Seoul Station
  • Elevator and luggage time
  • Ticketing time if needed

For many first-time travelers, reaching Seoul Station around four hours before an international flight gives a comfortable starting point.

Example: 3:00 PM International Flight

Suppose your goal is to arrive at the airport around noon.

On the timetable checked September 9, 2026, an Express leaving Seoul Station at 10:56 was scheduled to arrive:

  • T1 at 11:39
  • T2 at 11:47

Getting into the AREX area around 10:25–10:35 would give a first-time traveler some breathing room.

But this is only an example based on that checked timetable.

Always recheck the schedule for your actual travel date.

If you are using Seoul Station City Airport Terminal, remember that its check-in cutoff is separate and strict.

What About Very Early or Late Flights?

Based on the schedules checked for this guide:

First Express from Seoul Station: 06:00

First All-Stop continuing to T2: 05:20

Last Express: 23:00

Late All-Stop services: later services exist, but destinations must be checked carefully

The first train is not early enough for every morning flight.

If the earliest rail option would put you at the airport too close to your airline cutoff, use another verified option such as a taxi, suitable airport bus, or an airport-area hotel.

For very early departures, sleeping near the airport is boring.

It is also much more pleasant than discovering at 5:20 a.m. that mathematics has betrayed you.

For late flights, do not build your plan around the absolute last possible train.

Leave room for delays, wrong turns, and airport processing.

Finding AREX Inside Seoul Station

Seoul Station is one complex, but KTX and Airport Railroad do not share the same gate area.

Follow signs for:

Airport Railroad / AREX

and the airplane symbol.

For the checked layout:

  • Express ticketing and City Airport Terminal: B2
  • All-Stop ticketing: B3
  • AREX platforms: B7

There are elevators, escalators, and moving walkways.

That does not mean vertical travel with luggage is instant.

If this is your first time entering from street level or transferring from KTX, allowing around 15–20 minutes to find the correct area is a reasonable planning buffer.

That is not an official minimum transfer time.

Orange signs generally guide you toward the Express.

Blue signs guide you toward the All-Stop service.

If you are standing at a normal T-money gate while holding an assigned-seat Express QR ticket, there is a good chance you followed the wrong signs.

Coming to Seoul Station by KTX?

If your route is:

Busan → KTX → Seoul Station → AREX → Incheon Airport

do not assume the KTX platform and AREX platform are next to each other.

Get off the KTX, follow Airport Railroad signs, and expect some vertical travel.

With heavy luggage, use elevators where practical.

For planning purposes, allowing at least 20–30 minutes between KTX arrival and an AREX Express departure is much calmer than trying to build a perfect platform-to-platform sprint.

That is an editorial buffer, not an official Korail connection guarantee.

A delayed KTX and an international flight are not two schedules you want negotiating with each other.

Planning the opposite direction?

Which AREX Makes More Sense for Your Trip?

First trip to Korea:
The Express is usually simpler, unless the wait for the next Express wipes out the time advantage.

Large suitcase:
Express is easier because of assigned seating and luggage racks.

Family with children:
Express usually reduces the number of small problems you need to manage at once.

Solo traveler with one small bag:
All-Stop is very good value when you have time.

Lowest possible fare:
Take the All-Stop with T-money.

Rush hour:
The Express avoids normal metro-style crowding.

Using Seoul Station City Airport Terminal:
You need an Express ticket.

Late flight:
Either can work. Choose based on your required airport arrival time, not based on which train leaves Seoul latest.

Example: One Large Suitcase and a T2 Flight

Imagine this:

First trip to Korea.

One large suitcase.

Limited Korean.

International flight from Terminal 2 at 3:00 PM.

A simple plan would be:

  1. Check the flight number and confirm Terminal 2.
  2. Check whether the airline and route qualify for Seoul Station City Airport Terminal.
  3. If using city check-in, arrive before the required T2 cutoff with extra queue time.
  4. Buy the Express ticket on B2.
  5. Keep the QR ticket ready.
  6. Put the suitcase in the shared luggage area.
  7. Sit in the assigned seat.
  8. Stay on the train after Terminal 1.
  9. At T2, follow departure signs.

If city check-in was completed, follow the appropriate airport procedure and still complete security.

If it was not, go to the airline check-in area first.

Nothing exciting happens in this plan.

That is exactly what you want on the way to an international flight.
